Across India Land & Life

A Cross-Country Learning Journey Across India

Land & Life is an 11-day experiential learning journey from Bangalore to the Himalayas, designed to explore how climate, geography, water, and necessity shape human life.

To express your interest, please submit the RSVP with participant details. We will contact you to complete confirmation through advance payment and share the next steps.

This program is organised by Abheek (Bangalore) — an alternative learner-centric pedagogical space that believes in lifelong, experiential learning. The journey is designed and facilitated by Gautham Sarang (Walking Ferns), inspired by his own life-learning experiences beyond formal systems.

The travel itself becomes part of the classroom. As we move across India by train, we observe changing landscapes, river systems, settlement patterns, food cultures, and regional adaptations. The mountain leg includes the historic Kalka–Shimla railway, followed by a three-day village immersion  in Himachal Pradesh.

Participants will engage through observation, discussion, walking explorations, craft interactions, and reflective sessions. The focus is on learning by doing, slow travel, and respectful immersion, not tourism.

This journey is open to children (8–16) and families who value experiential education and are comfortable with shared travel, public transport, and simple village facilities.

Dates given are tentative. Will update soon.

Geetha Dhananjayan

Academic Mentor

I'm an educator, homeschooling mentor, and lifelong learner. Having homeschooled my own children, I understand the excitement and uncertainty of choosing an alternative educational path.

If you’re exploring alternatives to conventional schooling, I can help you navigate recognised curricula and learning pathways to find what works best for your child and family.

My superpower: Making learning simple, meaningful, and joyful.

Athira Pillai

Documentation & Storytelling

I love noticing the little things—the spark in a child's eyes, the messy moments of discovery, and the stories hidden in everyday learning. For me, every child has a story worth telling, and it's a privilege to help preserve those memories.

Something I love: Watching children enjoy moments of silence in this noisy world.

Amrutha P

Learning Facilitator & Communications

I'm usually the first friendly voice you'll hear from Walking Ferns. I stay connected with parents and volunteers, share updates, and keep our WhatsApp community buzzing. I also spend time with children as a learning facilitator, which is easily my favourite part of the day.

Fun fact: I've read the same picture book ten times and still laugh at it every single time.

Sneha Susan Mathew

Manager – Operations

I help keep the day-to-day operations at Walking Ferns running smoothly, overseeing administration, finance, and HR. I'm also a mental health professional who believes in creating a safe, welcoming community where people of all ages can learn, grow, and be themselves.

My superpower: Bringing clarity to chaos—both in systems and in people.

Something I love: Music, art, and meaningful conversations.

Gautham Sarang

Founder & Learning Director

I'm passionate about creating learning environments where children can develop curiosity, responsibility, and a strong sense of self. Through Walking Ferns, I work with families, facilitators, and children to explore alternatives to conventional education and design meaningful learning experiences rooted in real life.

My superpower: Asking questions that make people think differently.

Something I love: Music, woodwork, outdoors, and time with my loved ones

Fun fact: I feel the same excitement about learning something new today as I did when I was a child.
