Walking Ferns

Experiential Learning in Nature

At Walking Ferns, we turn the world into a classroom. Through camps, study trips, expert sessions, and weekend huddles, children step beyond books and screens to experience nature, culture, science, and history firsthand. They connect with nature, visit museums, explore historical sites, and interact with public institutions, learning directly from experts—immersing themselves in the real world instead of just reading about it.

Inspired by Sarang, a pioneering alternative education model, Walking Ferns blends experiential learning with everyday life, complementing both schooling and homeschooling. In a world shaped by AI and rapid change, we help children build curiosity, adaptability, and creativity—skills that help them become not just future-ready, but lifelong solution-seekers.

What Do We Do?

At Walking Fern, we organize a variety of activities, including educational trips that combine fun, culture, nature, and lots of learning. Our programs are designed to:

  • Foster Curiosity: We take children to historical sites, museums, performances, art exhibitions, architectural marvels, interactions with diverse people, and nature excursions, sparking their curiosity and encouraging them to ask questions. From the micro world we see through a microscope to the faraway galaxies through a telescope, every aspect of the universe is part of their lessons.
  • Promote Hands-On Learning: Through interactive experiences like crafts, carpentry, playhouse building, playing in nature, encouragement to tell stories, and more, we make learning tangible and engaging.
  • Build Connections: Our activities emphasize the importance of community and teamwork, helping children build strong bonds with their peers and mentors.

Camps

Our camps are immersive, multi-day experiences where children live and learn together in a natural setting. These camps encourage independence, teamwork, and hands-on learning, blending outdoor exploration with creative activities. Like our Mayannur Camp, they provide a space for children to build friendships, discover new skills, and engage deeply with the world around them.

Visting the Radio Telescope in Ooty

Study Trips

We take learning on the road! Our study trips introduce children to cutting-edge science, history, and culture through curated visits to research centers, museums, and historical landmarks. On our recent Ooty trip, for example, children explored the TIFR radio telescope and learned about space science directly from researchers—an experience that textbooks alone can’t provide.

Basics of Adventure sports

Expert Sessions

From adventure sports basics to sexuality education, our expert-led sessions bring children face-to-face with specialists who share knowledge, inspire curiosity, and answer real-world questions. These sessions create a safe space for kids to learn deeply, ask questions, and expand their understanding of various fields.

The Chemistry of Curd: An Experiment in a Weekend Huddle

Weekend Huddles

Every week, children gather in our learning centers to play in nature, explore, and learn together. These huddles create a sense of community and belonging while allowing kids to engage in unstructured, curiosity-driven learning. Whether it’s discovering local wildlife, experimenting with science, or simply sharing stories, our weekend huddles help children reconnect with nature and each other. Currently we have centers in Koyilandi, Angamaly, and Thiruvananthapuram.
