Sarang
Sarang is an alternative way of learning and living that began over 40 years ago.
Instead of treating education as something separate from life, Sarang sees learning as something that happens through living, observing, doing, and being part of a community.
Learning at Sarang does not follow a fixed curriculum or standard schooling structure. It emerges through engagement with the world — through nature, work, conversations, skills, and everyday experiences — within a space that values dialogue, participation, and shared decision-making.
The focus is not just on acquiring knowledge, but on developing:
the ability to observe and question
the confidence to learn independently
the sensitivity to live in harmony with people and nature
the resilience to adapt to an uncertain world
Sarang is also rooted in its land — a place that was once barren and is now a regenerated forest and living ecosystem. The environment itself becomes a teacher.
I grew up in this learning space, and it has shaped how I understand education, childhood, and life.
Walking Ferns is an attempt to explore how some of these principles can take form in today’s world, in ways that are accessible to more families.
