Muziris & Pattanam Visit – Archaeology: Chapter 3

Muziris & Pattanam Visit

Chapter 3 – Archaeology Series

📅 April 11–12
📍 Pattanam – Muziris (via Aluva)

Continuing our journey from the Introduction session and the Edakkal visit, we now move into the third chapter of our Archaeology Series, exploring Pattanam and Muziris, where layers of history come alive through land, artefacts, and lived spaces.

This is a two-day immersive program designed to help participants connect archaeology, history, trade, and landscape in a meaningful way.

Day 1 – Pattanam (Archaeology in Context)

Participants will reach Aluva Railway Station in the morning.

From there:
Aluva → Paravur (bus) → Pattanam (auto)

Facilities will be available at Pattanam to freshen up, followed by breakfast.

We will then:

• Visit the Pattanam excavation site
• Spend time understanding the site and its significance
• Engage in a session/discussion around archaeology and the region

After lunch, the second half of the day is intentionally kept light.

We may:

• Visit Cherai Beach or Fort Kochi (optional, based on group decision)
• Or return to the stay space for rest, conversations, and informal activities

The idea is to slow down and reflect, as the next day will be information-rich.

Stay

Stay will be arranged at Vikas Bhavan in simple dormitory-style accommodation, with separate spaces for men and women.

Dinner will be arranged at the stay.

Day 2 – Muziris (Layers of History)

After an early breakfast at Vikas Bhavan, we will join the Muziris Heritage Project tour.

🕘 Starts at 9:30 AM
🕟 Ends by 4:30 PM

The day will include:

• Visits to multiple museums and heritage sites
• Understanding trade networks, settlements, and cultural exchanges
• Insights into Jewish, colonial, and regional histories
• Guided exploration throughout the day

After the tour, we return to Aluva Railway Station, and participants can head back.

Who can join

This program is open to all age groups.

Families, children, and individuals interested in history, archaeology, and culture are welcome.

Fee: ₹2000 per person
Includes stay, food, Muziris tour tickets, and local transport (Aluva–Pattanam–Muziris). Additional optional travel (if any) will be shared as actuals.

Nature of the Program

This is not a rushed or checklist-based trip.

We are trying to:

• Understand history through places and landscapes
• Connect archaeology with real-world observations
• Travel, observe, reflect, and discuss

Notes

• Optional local travel (Cherai / Fort Kochi) will be shared as actuals
• Further coordination details will be shared with participants after registration

Why this visit?

Muziris is not just a location.
It is a story of trade, movement, culture, and connection.

Through this visit, we begin to see how land, people, and history are deeply interconnected.
