Introduction to Archaeology: Chapter1 – Beginning of the Walking Ferns Archaeology Series.

About the Program

This program marks the beginning of the Walking Ferns Archaeology Series, designed to help children and families explore history through direct engagement with people, places, and landscapes.

The day combines an introductory session on archaeology with a guided field visit, offering participants a first-hand understanding of how archaeology helps us read the past. The program is organised in association with the Department of History, NSS College, Manjeri (Malappuram district), and will be facilitated by Dr. KP Rajesh, Associate Professor of History.

 Program Flow

Morning – Introduction to Archaeology
The session begins with an interactive introduction covering:

  • What archaeology is and how archaeologists work

  • Why archaeology is important for understanding human history

  • Key archaeological timelines and locations in South India

  • How archaeology connects with everyday life

  • Lifelong learning in Archeology
  • An overview of pathways and careers related to archaeology

Afternoon: Field Visit to Pattarkulam
In the second half of the day, the group will travel to Pattarkulam to visit a rare dolmen structure. The site is significant due to its unique typology, believed to be among the very few of its kind recorded in India.

At the site, participants will:

  • Observe the structure and the surrounding landscape

  • Learn how archaeologists study and interpret such monuments

  • Discuss what these sites tell us about early human societies

  • Understand the importance of conservation and respectful engagement with heritage spaces

The program will conclude at the site, with dispersal by around 4:00 PM.

Who is this for?

  • Ideal for children aged 5–17, but we don’t restrict learning by age. If you’re curious and can engage with the sessions with focus, you’re welcome to join.

  • Families who wish to learn together

  • No prior knowledge of archaeology is required

Practical Notes

  • Travel between locations in Manjeri will be coordinated on the day

  • Participants are encouraged to carry water, snacks, and sun protection

  • The program involves walking and outdoor observation

What’s next in the Archaeology Series?

This introductory session will be followed by deeper archaeology-related experiences in the coming months, including site visits, camps, and study tours that explore early human settlements, trade routes, and material culture across the region.
